چکیده

Field emission cathodes are being considered for use on low-power electrostatic and electromagnetic propulsion systems as well as on electrodynamic tether systems. In these systems, field emission cathodes prevent negative spacecraft charging by emitting a lowpower electron beam that is accommodated by the ambient plasma. Prototype cathodes were tested at the University of Michigan as part of a Student Space Systems Fabrication Laboratory satellite project. This paper presents experimental emission performance results of molybdenum and carbon nanotube field emission cathodes operating in a krypton plasma of density ne=1x10 m and temperature Te = 0.5 – 1.0 eV.

Operation of Spindt-Type, Carbon Nanotube Cold Cathodes in a Hall Effect Thruster Environment

Electric propulsion devices for space applications greatly reduce the propellant mass requirements on a spacecraft in comparison to chemical rockets. To date, gridded ion engines and Hall effect thrusters (HETs) rely on thermionic hollow cathodes to supply electrons for propellant ionization and ion beam neutralization. Hollow cathodes consume up to 10% of the total propellant used in low-power...

Dramatic Reduction of Dc Field Emission from Large Area Electrodes by Plasma-source Ion Implantation*

Field emission is one of the principal phenomena limiting the operating voltage of practical electron guns. There is interest in developing photoemission cathode based DC electron guns employing cathode field strengths and cathode-anode voltages well above the present stateof-the-art. Such electron sources could provide high brightness, high average current beams for energy recovered supercondu...

In-FEEP Thruster Ion Beam Neutralization with Thermionic and Field Emission Cathodes

Charge neutralization of an In-FEEP thruster was demonstrated with three different electron sources by zeroing the floating potential of the thruster and neutralizer system. The three cathodes used in the investigation include a mixed metal thermionic cathode, a carbon nanotube field emission cathode, and a Spindt-type Mo field emission array cathode. The field emission cathodes significantly i...

One-dimensional combined field and thermionic emission model and comparison with experimental results

An integrated theoretical model has been developed to predict the entire range of emission from thermionic to field emission, including the mixed emission regime. The model assumes a Sommerfeld free electron model supply function, for which the Fermi-Dirac distribution applies with a nonzero temperature. The electron transmission coefficient is calculated in one dimension using a transfer matri...

Fabrication of gated cathode structures using an in situ grown vertically aligned carbon nanofiber as a field emission element

Vertically aligned carbon nanofibers ~VACNFs! are extremely promising cathode materials for microfabricated field emission devices, due to their low threshold field to initiate electron emission, inherent stability, and ruggedness, and relative ease of fabrication at moderate growth temperatures. We report on a process for fabricating gated cathode structures that uses a single in situ grown ca...
